July 18, 2009 we had a farewell party for Sister
Hunsicker. She has been teaching the Certified Nursing Assistants classes in
Chinle. We went to Sister Gloria and Brother Ned
Curley's ranch inside Canyon
DeChelly. We were riding with the
Schencks and got stuck and high-centered in the sand on the way in. We felt better when one of the park rangers also got stuck. On their land there are a few ruins we could climb up to and get a close look. There are also hundreds of
petrogylphs and pictographs on the walls of the canyon. There is also a variety of plant life. The flower is the Sacred
Datura, also known as
Jimson Weed. It is night blooming and very poisonous. The Native Americans use it for certain kinds of medicine but it is used cautiously and only after a ceremony is performed for protection.
