Lena, and her son stopped to see us on their way back home from the Western Nation Fair in Tuba City. They danced and won first place. Look good, don't they?
Beautiful country! Not a lot to support life but breathtaking to look at. We are standing in front of a huge wall of Petroglyphs (pictures scratched into the rock). Supposedly done by the ancients but kids herding the sheep have been known to assist in the decoration. My favorite was the flying bird dragging something. I do have to include some fauna- a red velvet ant? Any one else have a guess? Don't laugh at the pants- we had to ford a stream.
There are inscriptions from every decade on the rocks somewhere. Notice how smooth the rocks are and how they shimmed the rocks to keep them level. The walls are two layers thick with fill in between. The flower looks like some kind of Baby's Breath.
A good brother from the ward took us out to his place where there are Anasazi ruins and petroglyphs. This is called the Long House because it is long and narrow. There is Elder Hope, Brother Sagganie (sp?), two friends of the Schencks, Elder and Sister Schenck, and Elder and Sister Burbank. There were thousands of pottery shards every where. The paint was bright and clear- pretty good for a thousand years old. You know those spiky old dry tumble weeds? Bet you didn't expect flowers like these on them,eh? I've seen pink, purple and white. Amazing what you see when you look close.
How would you like grazing rights on this property? It's up by Mexican Water. This flower started blooming in September on big bushes about 4 ft. high. Not sure what it is. The two big rocks are called Elephant Feet. They are between Kayenta and Tuba City. Last of all is sunrise over Church Rock.
